The Megawatt Revolution: Redefining Electric Vehicle Charging
BYD's Megawatt Flash Charging represents the most significant breakthrough in electric vehicle charging technology to date. The so-called "super e-platform" will be capable of peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts (kW), enabling cars that use it to travel 400 km (249 miles) on a 5-minute charge, fundamentally changing the economics of electric vehicle ownership.
During the presentation, BYD said the batteries support up to 1,000 volts and charging currents of up to 1,000 amps. That makes it possible to charge them with up to one megawatt. This revolutionary system achieves 10C charging, the highest rate of any mass-produced battery, through sophisticated silicon carbide power modules and redesigned battery chemistry.
Massive Infrastructure Expansion: 15,000 Chargers Nationwide
Focus: Building BYD's proprietary charging network with maximum output capacity of 1,360kW per station.
Innovation Focus: The goal is integrating more social capital into infrastructure development and making ultra-fast charging widely accessible to electric vehicle (EV) users.
Innovation Focus: Strategic collaboration to ensure comprehensive geographic coverage across China's diverse market regions.
Super e-Platform: Engineering Excellence Redefined
The automaker claims it's the world's first mass-produced vehicle platform on a 1,000-volt electrical architecture—higher than the best EVs we have that run on 800 volts, or even the new 926-volt Lucid Gravity. This breakthrough required developing entirely new components that simply didn't exist before.
It also has a high-performance 580 kW electric motor in the rear axle and a new generation of silicon carbide power modules (1,500V), enabling unprecedented power density and thermal management.
Redesigned Blade LFP battery with 35% increase in its high-temperature lifespan and 50% reduction in internal resistance for optimal fast-charging capability.
With up to 30,511 revolutions per minute, the new electric motor tops the performance of a V12 fuel engine, delivering 580kW power output from a single module.
Innovative dual-connector system that can "turn supercharging piles into flash charging ones and fast charging piles into supercharging ones", effectively doubling charging speeds at existing infrastructure.
In order to completely solve our user's charging anxiety, we have been pursuing a goal to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refueling time of petrol vehicles.
First-Generation Vehicles: Han L and Tang L
Performance Specifications
BYD Han L: According to the carmaker's website, the Han L EV needs 2.7 seconds and the Tang L EV 3.9 seconds to reach the 100 kph mark. The latter has a top speed of 257 kph, while the Han is said to be able to speed up to 305 kph.
Market Reception: Since their launch in April, the Han L and Tang L models have achieved first-month sales of 10,483 and 11,406 units, respectively, helping the Han and Tang family surpass 40,000 total deliveries.
Real-World Testing Results
During the live test, this station reached the 1 MW level of power in 10 seconds (while charging Han L EV and Tang L EV). The car's charging time from 7% to 50% was just 4.5 minutes.
And after a flight to Beijing for a technical briefing and demonstration, to which InsideEVs was the sole Western outlet invited, I can confirm that five-minute fast-charging is very real.
Advanced liquid cooling systems ensure consistent performance with "Megawatt charging will not affect the battery," a BYD spokesperson told me.
Peak charging speed of "1 second and 2 kilometres", enabling unprecedented range recovery rates for long-distance travel.
Competitive Landscape and Market Impact
The BYD Megawatt Flash Charger is the most powerful passenger car pile in the industry. Its core rivals also show impressive performance. However, they still lag behind: Tesla V4: 500 kW. Li Auto 5C: 520 kW. NIO Power: 640 kW.
Implementation Challenges and Solutions
BYD will equip the charging stations with energy storage systems, allowing them to deliver 1,000 kW of charging power even in areas where the local grid cannot supply enough electricity.
The company didn't specify the time frame or how much it would invest in building such facilities, but massive partnership expansion suggests significant capital commitment.
Our world-first 'intelligent voltage boost' charging technology is fully compatible with public fast charging piles, ensuring users can charge at any station.
BYD redesigned the plug, or "gun," to be better for women and smaller folks to use, weighing only 2 kilograms compared to bulky CCS connectors.
Future Implications for Electric Mobility
BYD envisions a future where EV charging is as fast and convenient as refuelling a traditional gasoline car, setting a new benchmark for the electrification era. This technology breakthrough fundamentally addresses the primary barrier to mass electric vehicle adoption.
