The UK's electric vehicle market welcomes a significant new player as Chinese automotive giant Geely officially launches its own-brand EX5, a mid-size electric SUV. With a highly competitive starting price and a robust set of features, the EX5 is poised to challenge established European and Asian models, signalling a new phase of Geely's expansion into Europe. The vehicle enters the market with a compelling proposition for families and fleet buyers alike.
A Competitive Starting Price for a Crowded Market
Geely has confirmed that the EX5 will enter the UK market with a starting price of £31,990. This positions the electric SUV aggressively against key rivals such as the Skoda Enyaq (starting from around £39,000) and the Kia Niro EV. This pricing strategy is clearly designed to attract budget-conscious buyers who are not willing to compromise on space, technology, or range.
The EX5 will be available in three trim levels:
- SE: Starting at £31,990
- Pro: Starting at £33,990, adding features like 19-inch wheels.
- Max: At the top of the range for £36,990, including a panoramic glass roof, a powered tailgate, and advanced comfort features like ventilated and massaging front seats.
Performance and Practicality: What the EX5 Offers
All versions of the UK-spec Geely EX5 are equipped with a 60.2 kWh usable LFP battery pack powering a single front-mounted electric motor. This setup delivers 160 kW (215 bhp) of power, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0-62 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds.
In terms of driving range, the entry-level SE model boasts a WLTP-estimated range of up to 267 miles on a single charge. For charging, the EX5 supports DC rapid charging at speeds of up to 100 kW. This allows the battery to be charged from 30% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes, a key feature for drivers undertaking longer journeys.
Interior, Technology, and a Touch of Lotus
Inside, the Geely EX5 aims to provide a premium feel without the premium price tag. The cabin is spacious and family-friendly, featuring a large 15.4-inch central touchscreen infotainment system. Materials such as the faux-leather "GeeLuxe" seats and wood-grain panels contribute to an interior that feels a step above many mainstream competitors.
Significantly, Geely has enlisted the expertise of Lotus Engineering to fine-tune the chassis and handling of the EX5 specifically for UK roads. Mike Yang, General Manager of Geely Auto UK, stated, "We're aware that UK customers have unique demands. That's why we're working with the experts at Lotus Engineering to make sure the EX5 delivers the right experience from day one." This collaboration aims to ensure the vehicle's ride and responsiveness meet the expectations of British drivers.
Geely's Broader European Ambitions
The launch of the EX5 under the Geely brand—which already owns well-known European marques like Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus—marks a strategic shift. The company is now stepping into the European market with its own nameplate, with the UK serving as a crucial entry point. This move is part of a wider global expansion, with Geely also having recently entered the Greek market. The company has ambitious plans to introduce more models to European consumers in the coming years and significantly expand its sales and service network.
With its combination of competitive pricing, solid specifications, and a focus on quality and driver experience, the Geely EX5 is set to be a compelling option in the increasingly crowded electric SUV market. Its arrival will undoubtedly intensify competition and provide more choice for European consumers looking to make the switch to electric mobility.
