Roaming still a mess across Europe?

I just drove from Belgium to Austria and used three different networks. Each required a separate app, and two of them charged wildly different rates for the same CCS fast charger. One even added a roaming fee that wasn't visible until the receipt arrived by email. I thought the EU was working on a single payment standard, but it clearly hasn't reached reality. Am I doing this wrong? Do you stick to one provider or have a go-to app that aggregates billing? Also, how do you handle charging curves when you're on a long trip and the price per kWh jumps after 80% at every stop? Keen to hear your workarounds.
