I've been thinking about the recent push for Level 3 systems, like Mercedes' Drive Pilot and Honda's sensing elite. On paper, L3 means hands-off, but you're still responsible for taking over when prompted. That seems like the worst of both worlds to me. Meanwhile, good L2+ systems like FSD and Super Cruise are getting smoother over time, even if they're technically hands-on. Aren't we just training people to stop paying attention with L3, while L2+ keeps the driver in the loop? Also, OTA updates are making these systems evolve so fast that the legal definitions almost feel outdated. Curious what this community thinks - is L3 a necessary stepping stone to robotaxis, or a regulatory dead end?
Do we really need L3 if L2+ is already good enough?
