Roaming in Europe: still a mess?

Just got back from a two-week road trip through France and Germany. Honestly, the charging experience varies so much from country to country. I thought the whole roaming thing was sorted by now, but I still ended up with three different apps and two RFID cards, and one network charged me almost double just for using a foreign provider. Is there any real way to avoid this? I'm looking at home wallboxes for daily use, but for occasional long trips, I want a simple, transparent pay-per-kWh solution that works across borders. What are you all using to keep costs sane when crossing the EU?
