RFID cards vs plug and charge: what actually works abroad?

Just did 2,800 km through Germany, Austria and Italy and the payment side was the worst part of the trip. My Ionity app worked, but two French networks rejected both my Visa and my Maingau card at the same stall, and a third wanted a local app with an address I could not fake. I ended up queuing behind a Dutch driver who simply plugged in and drove off, which made me feel like an idiot with my three cards and two phones. Is plug and charge finally reliable outside your home country, or is an RFID card still the safer bet? Also curious whether anyone has a favourite roaming app that does not hide the per-kWh price until after you authenticate.
