Prague has extended its EV-ready streetlight programme until the end of 2028. The city is not installing chargers on every lamp post right away—it is laying the grid connections and cable routes first. In 2026 alone, that means preparing around 150 streetlights for later AC charging at a cost of roughly 100 million CZK, about €4.1 million.
What exactly is Prague extending?
The Czech capital is combining two public infrastructure jobs: modernising street lighting and preparing the local electricity grid for electric mobility. Where the city already has to dig up streets and pavements to renew cables, it is now laying shared cable routes that can later feed EV charging points. The agreements involve the City of Prague, grid operator PREdistribuce and municipal technology company Technologie hlavního města Prahy (THMP). “We are continuing to modernise public lighting and link it with the development of e-mobility,” said Deputy Mayor for Infrastructure Michal Hroza. The original deadline was the end of 2026. The city now says the first jointly implemented measures took longer than planned and the allocated funds have not been fully used, so the three existing contracts have been extended until 31 December 2028. The work includes joint tenders, coordinated modernisation and construction of the physical prerequisites—not the charging hardware itself.The numbers behind the 2030 target
Prague’s medium-term scenario counts on up to 180,000 electric vehicles by 2030, which the city estimates will require around 4,500 charging stations. That works out to roughly one public charging point per 40 EVs, or 25 points per 1,000 vehicles. However, not all of those 4,500 will be fast chargers. Streetlight-based charging is typically AC and lives on a different part of the charging curve than motorway DC stations. Prague announced an investment of around 100 million CZK for the 2026 batch of 150 streetlights. At the stated conversion rate, that is approximately €4.1 million, or an average of 666,667 CZK per lamp—roughly €27,300 each. That sounds expensive for an AC socket, but the money is not buying a wallbox. It covers shared underground cable routes, grid dimensioning, joint tenders, project coordination and the civil engineering needed to avoid opening the same street twice. Once a lamp post is EV-ready, the actual charge point can be added later at much lower marginal cost. For comparison, a home AC wallbox might cost a few hundred to around €1,500 before installation. If you live in Prague and park on the street, the extension is good news in principle—but not an immediate charging solution. The city is building readiness now, and charging points will appear only where and when demand justifies them. That likely means years of gradual rollout rather than a sudden switch-on.
