Revolutionary Combination of Functionality and Aerodynamics
Stellantis, the parent company of Ram, has recently filed a patent for an innovative rear step designed for its electric pickups. This step not only extends to facilitate access to the cargo bed but also functions as an active aerodynamic diffuser.
Patent on a New Type of Diffuser
The patent, submitted in December of last year and published on July 4th, describes the system as a "vehicle rear step and diffuser". This inventive feature could significantly enhance the efficiency of electric pickups by reducing aerodynamic drag.
Inspiration from Concepts
The idea of an active diffuser is not entirely new. Ram had already showcased a similar feature on its 1500 Revolution BEV concept during CES 2023. Mercedes-Benz has also experimented with an active diffuser on its Vision EQXX concept. However, the combination of a diffuser and a step is completely unique.
Practical Use and Design
According to the patent, the lower surface of the step is shaped to function as a diffuser, while the upper surface serves as a step. This feature would deploy only at higher speeds to minimize the risk of damage at lower speeds or in urban traffic.
Benefits for Electric Vehicles
Rear diffusers are traditionally used in sports vehicles to increase downforce and improve stability. For electric vehicles, however, they can offer significant efficiency improvements by reducing air resistance, which can extend their range.
Stellantis plans to use this feature in body-on-frame vehicles like Ram pickups, including the 2025 Ram 1500 REV. The patent also includes diagrams of the rear doors of these vehicles.
