Nio has switched on its first fifth-generation battery swap stations in seven Chinese cities, opening the same network to Nio, Onvo and Firefly models for the first time. The launch coincides with two milestones: 4,006 swap stations in China and 120 million completed battery swaps. For comparison, our own supercharger database currently lists 483 locations across Europe.
What generation five changes
The core of the new generation is an in-house swap platform that adjusts its configuration in real time and locates each vehicle’s battery mounting points precisely. Nio says the system supports wheelbases of up to 3.5 metres, which covers everything from small cars to large SUVs. That is exactly what finally brings the roughly four-metre-long Firefly into the swap network. Previous-generation stations could not physically accommodate its shorter wheelbase, so the compact model was excluded from one of Nio’s key selling points. Now all three brands — Nio, Onvo and Firefly — share the same infrastructure. The first fifth-generation stations have gone live in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Hefei, Chengdu and Quanzhou. The station at Qiaoxiang Gymnasium in Quanzhou is both the first fifth-generation site and Nio’s 4,000th battery swap station in China.The numbers behind the milestone
Nio completed its 120-millionth battery swap on 7 August. The company had only passed the 100-million mark in early February, meaning it completed another 20 million swaps in roughly six months. That is a pace of about 3.3 million swaps per month. The wider infrastructure numbers are just as striking. As of 7 August, Nio operated:- 4,006 battery swap stations in China

- 1,049 swap stations along motorways, connecting nine north-south and eleven east-west routes and 16 major metropolitan areas

Why Firefly access matters
Firefly is Nio’s compact, entry-level brand, and the roughly four-metre model is aimed squarely at China’s price-sensitive small-EV segment. Battery swapping has two practical advantages for that audience: it removes waiting time at a charger and, when paired with battery-as-a-service pricing, can lower the upfront cost of the car. The catch has always been infrastructure compatibility. If Firefly buyers could not use the swap stations that larger Nio and Onvo models use, the value proposition weakened. Fifth-generation stations solve that by physically accommodating shorter wheelbases. That matters because compact EVs in this class rarely have headline-grabbing charging speeds, so a three-minute swap is a genuine differentiator — assuming there is a station nearby.A China-first bet, not a European one
Nio has been clear that the expansion of its battery swap network is focused on its home market for now. The company recently slowed its international expansion and does not plan to add further battery swap or proprietary charging stations in Europe for the time being. Nio also does not expect to introduce new vehicles based on its 900-volt NT3 platform in Europe before late 2027 or early 2028. That means the European swap network is likely to stay at its current size for the foreseeable future, while the concept continues to scale in China. The fifth-generation stations broaden the network’s reach by letting all three group brands use the same infrastructure, but that benefit stops at China’s borders for now. European charging expansion is heading in a different direction. Prague, for example, is extending its EV-ready streetlight charging project until 2028, and Ireland is testing smart-charging incentives for home users. These are lower-cost, AC-first paths that do not require the heavy capex of a battery swap network.Practical takeaway
If you are in China and drive — or plan to drive — a Firefly, this is meaningful news: your car now has access to the same swap network as larger Nio models. Check the station coverage around your home and workplace; Nio’s own data says 80.1% of users already have a station within three kilometres, but that figure is brand-wide, not Firefly-specific. If you are in Europe, the takeaway is simpler: do not plan around Nio battery swap stations. Use public fast charging instead.
