The $1,100 bet on a ready-made range extender
Building an EREV powertrain from scratch takes years and billions — time Xiaomi doesn’t have. So the tech giant turned to Harbin Dongan Auto Engine, a Changan subsidiary that already supplied range extenders to Leapmotor and Li Auto’s first SUV. According to Sina Auto, the purchase price for the M15DRE 1.5‑litre turbo unit is just 8,000 yuan ($1,100).
That’s almost automotive pocket change. For context, a single 76 kWh LFP battery pack like the one in the fully electric Skynomad N70 likely costs €6,000–8,000 at today’s Chinese cell prices. Swapping the bulk of that battery for an $1,100 engine slashes the bill of materials and lets Xiaomi offer an EREV at a price point where every sale stands a chance of making a profit.
44.3 % thermal efficiency — good, not great
The M15DRE’s claimed 44.3 % thermal efficiency is respectable, but it’s no headline number. Geely’s Galaxy A7 EM‑PHEV recently set a world record with a 47.26 % efficiency engine according to CarNewsChina. Yet the Dongan unit still returns a WLTC‑measured 5.7 L/100 km on the full‑size N90 SUV — better than many conventional petrol SUVs and low enough to keep running costs acceptable even when the battery runs dry.
At an average European fuel price of roughly €1.10 per litre, 5.7 L/100 km translates to about €6.27 per 100 km. That’s roughly double what a mid‑size EV would cost on home charging, but it’s a familiar number for drivers not ready to go fully electric — and far lower than a comparable non‑electrified large SUV.
What our own N70 data tells us about the EV vs EREV split
We already ran a real‑world reality check when the electric N70 dropped its 505 km CLTC range from a 76 kWh battery. CLTC numbers are notoriously optimistic. Our EV range calculator, fed with Bjørn Nyland’s real‑world methodology, suggests that 505 km CLTC shrinks to roughly 380 km in mild summer weather and closer to 330 km in winter — a 25–35 % haircut that European buyers should expect.
The EREV approach sidesteps that shortfall. Even if the EREV version runs a smaller battery (Xiaomi hasn’t disclosed the exact capacity yet), the petrol generator removes range anxiety overnight. For Xiaomi, the real win is margin: the Dongan engine costs a fraction of a big battery pack, and the EREV can be sold at a price where each unit contributes cash instead of draining it.
From Maextro luxury to Skynomad volume — same engine, different worlds
Interestingly, the same 1.5‑litre Dongan range extender also serves in the Maextro S800 Grand Design, Huawei’s $235,300 flagship sedan. That a single engine can sit in both a luxury statement and a cost‑sensitive volume SUV says a lot about the maturity of China’s EREV supply chain.
Harbin Dongan has evolved from a microvan engine builder into a dedicated NEV powertrain supplier, and its client list now includes Leapmotor, Huawei, and Xiaomi. While Li Auto walked away after carbon‑buildup issues with early Dongan engines, Xiaomi seems willing to take the risk — or is confident those teething problems are resolved.
The Skynomad family is not yet confirmed for European sale, and right‑hand‑drive production remains a question mark. But the underlying arithmetic — $1,100 for a petrol generator versus €6,000+ for a large LFP battery — explains why Chinese EREVs could undercut many European plug‑in hybrids if they ever land here.
