Plug & Charge is one of those features that sounds trivial until you have stood in the rain at a charger in an unfamiliar town, hunting for the right app. Anything that removes the QR code from the process is welcome. The question we always ask is what the convenience costs.
What Red E Go actually changes
Detroit-based Red E Charge calls the service Red E Go. After a one-time setup in the network's app — vehicle details plus a payment method — drivers can plug in and walk away at compatible dispensers, with billing handled automatically. No app, no card, no QR code at the post itself. The company says the feature is live at certain stations rather than all of them, so it is worth checking before you plan around it.
The network in numbers
According to the US Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center, Red E operates more than 1,000 locations and roughly 4,600 charging ports across 46 states. Of those, 2,159 ports are DC fast charging at 579 stations, while about 600 sites also carry close to 2,500 Level 2 ports.
Growth is why this network is on the radar at all. In Q2 2026 Red E added 315 new DC ports — the fourth-highest total in the country, behind Tesla, Walmart and ChargePoint, ahead of Electrify America, EVgo and Ionna. In J.D. Power's 2026 US EVX Public Charging Study it placed fifth overall with 628 points out of 1,000. That sounds better than it is: the segment average was 666, so fifth place still sits below average, and only the top four networks clear the bar.
Hardware is a mixed bag. Output ranges from 10 kW to a nameplate 640 kW across J1772, CCS1, NACS and CHAdeMO connectors. Treat the 640 kW figure the way we treat any headline charging number — that is almost certainly a shared cabinet rating across several stalls, not what a single car sees. CHAdeMO, meanwhile, tells you who the network was originally built for: Leaf drivers are still out there, and they still need plugs.
The tariff spread is the actual story
DCFC Tracker lists Red E's pricing between $0.40 and $1.15 per kWh depending on site and plug type. That is a 2.9× spread inside one operator. Converted at $1.17 per euro, it is €0.34 and €0.98 per kWh. Applied to a mid-size EV at 18 kWh/100 km:
- $0.40/kWh (€0.34) → €6.15 per 100 km
- $1.15/kWh (€0.98) → €17.70 per 100 km
- Petrol car, 6.5 l/100 km at €1.55/l → €10.08 per 100 km

For European context: our supercharger database tracks 483 locations, and the spread here is narrower — most DC tariffs we track sit roughly between €0.35 and €0.90 per kWh, depending on network, subscription and country. The cheapest-supercharger list shows the bottom of that band. The US picture, where no AFIR-style price transparency applies, shows what an unregulated tariff landscape produces: the same plug, on the same network, can cost nearly three times as much.
Is it real Plug & Charge, or just auto-billing?
This is where the announcement gets fuzzy, and it matters if you are choosing a car on the promise of it.
True Plug & Charge is defined by ISO 15118: car and charger exchange a certificate over the cable, and payment is authorised without any network-specific account. That is what makes it portable across operators. What Red E describes — vehicle details and a card stored in one company's app — can just as easily be an auto-billing account tied to a single network, with nothing standardised underneath.
The distinction is testable. If the car identifies itself to a charger it has never met before, it is real Plug & Charge. If it only works on that one network, it is a subscription with better UX.
What Europe already has — and what nobody has solved
The EU did the boring part first. AFIR obliges operators of new public chargers above 50 kW to accept bank-card payment, and ISO 15118 Plug & Charge sits inside the same standardisation push, with certificate brokers such as Hubject handling the cross-network plumbing. That is why a European driver is less likely to need one app per network than a US driver is — even though our tariffs are no cheaper.
What neither continent has solved is the cost of the hardware. We covered EZO's €150 million raise for 3,000 UK and Ireland charge points — €50,000 per point. Red E's 2,159 DC ports at that unit cost would imply investment in the region of €108 million. Charging is a capital-intensive business, and somebody pays for it, usually the driver at the expensive end of the tariff range.
Keep the scale in mind, too. We calculated that Onsemi's EPP inverter with 15% lower losses is worth roughly €2.90 a year to an average driver. Efficiency of that order is pocket change next to a 2.9× swing in what you pay per kWh. Tariffs, not silicon, decide your running costs.
What to do with this
- Set up the account before you need it, then check the price in the app before you plug in — and pick your site accordingly.
- Compare €/kWh, not kW. A 640 kW post at €0.98/kWh is worse value than a 150 kW post at €0.40/kWh for almost every car on sale.
- Plan the whole route, not one stop. Our charging station map and cheapest-superchargers list exist for exactly that.
Does Plug & Charge work across different charging networks?
Only if it is genuine ISO 15118 Plug & Charge, backed by a certificate the car can present to any compliant charger. Where a network instead stores your vehicle and card in its own app, the convenience stops at that network's boundary — you will be back to an app or a card at the next operator.
Why can one network charge $0.40 and $1.15 per kWh for the same electricity?
Usually three things: local energy and demand charges, site utilisation (a busy location spreads fixed costs over more kWh), and hardware — older 50 kW equipment is cheap to run, new 350 kW+ cabinets are not. Where regulators do not force tariff transparency, the whole spread gets passed to the driver.
