Yolin $899 battery charging cabinet tested: 90-min fire resistance, 6 outlets

Electrek just tested Yolin's lithium-ion battery charging cabinet — a steel box with active fire suppression, temperature-controlled ventilation and six AC outlets. We looked at the data and ran our own numbers for European e-bike and EV owners charging at home.

What the cabinet actually is

The Workshop model Electrek tested is the larger of two versions. It weighs over 41 kg empty and uses double-wall steel construction, locking casters, and six integrated AC outlets inside. Mounted near the ceiling are automatic fire suppression pucks designed to discharge at the extreme temperatures of a battery fire. There is also an independent smoke alarm and a temperature-controlled ventilation fan that only runs when a set threshold is exceeded. Yolin says the cabinet's containment-focused structure references several European fire-resistance standards and is intended to provide up to 90 minutes of fire resistance.

The smaller Urban model costs $599 and has three AC outlets, but the same floor footprint. For European readers: at current exchange rates that is roughly €820 and €550 before shipping, VAT and any import duty. Adding the standard Czech 21 % VAT would push the Workshop model to around €990 — a lot for a cabinet, but less than a burned workshop or apartment.

The safety problem it is solving

Quality lithium-ion batteries are generally safe, but thermal runaway events are dramatic when they happen. The cabinet's job is to contain a fire before it spreads through a room, while the smoke alarm gives you an early warning if something starts going wrong during a charge cycle. Unlike a constantly running fan, the thermal management fan switches on only when needed, keeping noise and dust low. For people who charge multiple e-bike batteries, cordless tool packs or delivery fleet batteries, that layering is the real value.

Our math: what charging inside actually costs

Using our EV charging cost calculator, at a European average home electricity price of €0.30/kWh, a typical 0.5 kWh e-bike battery costs about €0.15 per full charge. Six batteries in the Workshop cabinet — 3 kWh total — cost €0.90 per cycle. Compare that with an EV from our 67-model catalog: a typical EV consumes 15–20 kWh/100 km, so driving 100 km costs €4.50–6.00 at the same rate. An e-bike using roughly 0.5 kWh/100 km costs about €0.15 per 100 km — around 30 times less energy per kilometre. That is why so many riders charge at home rather than relying on public charging. Our supercharger database lists 483 locations across Europe, but home AC is still the cheaper daily option for e-bikes and most EV owners.

Should you buy one?

If you own one high-quality e-bike and follow basic charging rules — charge on a non-flammable surface and do not leave it completely unattended — this cabinet is probably overkill. If you have multiple e-bikes, a workshop full of cordless tools, or live in an apartment where a battery fire would be catastrophic, the $899/€820+ price starts to make sense. Electrek's review praised the build quality, the thoughtful charging workflow and the automatic suppression and smoke alarm. Those are features you hope never to use, but the peace of mind is real for households cycling many batteries daily.

What we would still like to see tested

The 90-minute fire resistance claim is encouraging, but Electrek did not intentionally trigger a thermal runaway — and neither should you. Independent certification data, such as EN 14470 or an equivalent fire-resistance standard, would make European buyers much more confident. We would also like a version that cuts power to the outlets automatically when the smoke alarm triggers, instead of waiting for a human to react. Right now the cabinet contains a fire, but it does not necessarily stop the charging current that may be feeding it.

Bottom line

This cabinet is a niche product that solves a real but low-probability problem. It is not a magic fix, just a well-built steel box with smart safety features. If you are an e-bike commuter with one battery, the $599 Urban model is probably enough. If you run a workshop or a small delivery fleet, the Workshop model's six outlets and 90-minute containment offer genuine value.
