BYD's Denza Z9GT arrives in Thailand at $89,870 with flash charging and 1,036 km CLTC

Denza put the Z9GT on sale in Thailand on 16 September for 2,999,900 baht — about $89,870 — and used the Bangkok launch to bring BYD's flash charging and second-generation Blade Battery to the market for the first time. The claims worth examining are the ones nobody demonstrated live: up to 1,036 km CLTC of range, and, in the tri-motor version added in China on 9 September, 10–70% in five minutes. We did the arithmetic on both.

The launch, the price and the market

Denza has been in Thailand since November 2024, when it entered with the D9 MPV. That was its fourth Asia-Pacific market; the brand now counts 13 in the region, and the Z9GT — a flagship shooting brake — is the model it is using to move further upmarket. At 2,999,900 baht ($89,870 at $1 = 33.38 baht), it lands in a bracket where buyers cross-shop German premium estates rather than Chinese SUVs.

For scale from our own earlier coverage: the Denza N8L EV we worked through with a 130 kWh pack and 960 km CLTC for about $45,000 sits at roughly half the Z9GT's Thai price. Part of the gap is the flash-charging hardware and the e3 tri-motor drivetrain, part is simply positioning.

BYD's Thai base makes the push easier to justify. Cumulative deliveries in the country reached 130,000 vehicles in July, and the Rayong plant — building cars since July 2024 with a designed capacity of 150,000 units a year — already exports to Europe alongside supplying the domestic market.

Flash charging: what 10–70% in five minutes actually asks of a pack

At the Bangkok event, BYD Thailand general manager Ke Yubin ran a live flash-charging demonstration, with the charging progress shown on screen. The e3 tri-motor battery-electric variant that Denza added in China on 9 September is quoted at 10–70% in five minutes and 10–97% in nine minutes.

The second figure deserves a sanity check. Filling 87 percentage points in nine minutes means an average of roughly 9.7 points per minute across the entire session. Denza has not published the usable capacity of the Z9GT's second-generation Blade pack, but if it is in the same order as the 130 kWh of the N8L, that implies roughly 700–750 kW average at the pack — average, not peak, and sustained for nine minutes. That is arithmetic with a stated assumption, not a measurement, and it is worth saying plainly: no other production car gets close to that number, on either basis.

There is a second reason for scepticism. A 10–97% run implies almost no taper above 80%, which is exactly where every pack on sale today slows down. The five-minute 10–70% claim is the more credible of the two; the nine-minute version is the one to wait for independent testing on. Megawatt-class charging is also spreading beyond Chinese passenger cars — Tesla has opened public Megachargers at three California sites for Forum Mobility's truck-charging rollout, which we covered here.

1,036 km CLTC — what a buyer should expect at 120 km/h

The battery-electric Z9GT is homologated at up to 1,036 km CLTC, the longest figure in the range. CLTC remains the most generous mainstream cycle in use, so the useful number is the one after conversion. When we did that for the N8L, 960 km CLTC came out at roughly 470 km at a steady 120 km/h — a factor of about 0.49. Apply the same factor to 1,036 km and the Z9GT lands near 505–510 km at 120 km/h.

That is an estimate, not a measurement: the Z9GT is not in Bjørn Nyland's test database yet, so nobody has a verified winter or motorway figure for it. If you want to run your own consumption against a route, our EV range calculator does exactly that.

The practical picture, if both claims hold: a 510 km motorway range and a nine-minute stop from 10% to 97% would genuinely change how a long European trip is planned. Both only hold at BYD's own flash-charging hardware.

The network is the catch

BYD completed its 10,000th flash-charging station in China in August. By the company's own framing that is halfway to its full-year target, which implies around 20,000 stations by the end of 2026 — and roughly 80 new sites a day to get there. In Thailand, the launch brings the technology to the market, but the network still has to follow the cars.

What European readers should take from a Bangkok launch

The Z9GT is not a Thailand-only story. Denza held its European launch in Paris in April 2026, presenting the Z9GT and the D9 DM-i together with the flash-charging technology, and the Rayong plant now ships to Europe. The car is already relevant here; the open question is when the charging hardware arrives, and whether anyone outside China will be able to use the headline numbers on a normal route.

Practical takeaway: when a car advertises a five-minute charge, ask two questions before you sign. First, what is the average power over the quoted window, not the peak. Second, how many of those chargers sit within a realistic detour of the routes you actually drive. A 1 MW peak that you reach twice a year is marketing; a 300 kW average you can reach every week is transport.

What to watch next: whether Thailand gets a flash-charging network rather than a demonstration, whether independent testing reproduces the 10–97% figure, and whether BYD starts putting these stations into Europe — because without that, the Z9GT's most interesting number stays in China.
