Mercedes-AMG has revealed the GT 53, the new entry point to its electric GT 4-Door lineup. It trades the GT 63's third motor and 1,153 hp for something arguably more useful: up to 809 km of WLTP range from the same 106 kWh battery. But WLTP figures only tell half the story — so we crunched the electricity costs, real-world estimates, and stacked them against what you'd pay fuelling a V8 AMG.
The numbers that matter
The GT 53 uses two permanently excited synchronous motors — one per axle — producing a combined 536 hp and 800 Nm of torque. Mercedes claims 0–100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (3.4 seconds with one-foot rollout) and an electronically limited top speed of 230 km/h. The headline figure, though, is range: up to 809 km WLTP from the 106 kWh (gross) battery. That is 113 km more than the tri-motor GT 63 and, on paper, enough to drive from Prague to Hamburg on a single charge. But WLTP is a laboratory number. With a vehicle weighing well over two tonnes and shaped for performance rather than aero efficiency, real-world consumption will sit higher. A reasonable estimate for mixed driving is 16–18 kWh/100 km, possibly 20+ kWh/100 km on the autobahn at sustained speed. That still leaves a genuine 500–600 km of real range — but the gap between the 809 km headline and reality matters for buyers planning long trips.What you lose vs the GT 63
The GT 53 sheds more than a motor. It also loses the GT 63's AMG Active Ride Control suspension with hydraulically linked dampers, active roll stabilisation, rear-wheel steering, and the dedicated Race, Drift, Drag Race, and Track Race driving modes. What remains is AMG Ride Control air suspension with adaptive dampers, six driving programs, and AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive. The front motor can decouple via a mechanical disconnect unit when not needed, letting the GT 53 cruise as a rear-wheel-drive car to reduce drag. The rear motor runs through a two-speed transmission — short first gear for launch and urban driving, taller second for highway efficiency. This is the architecture that unlocks the range advantage over its 1,153 hp sibling.Cost per kilometre: electricity vs petrol
This is where the GT 53 gets genuinely compelling for European buyers. Let us run the figures. At an estimated real-world consumption of 17 kWh/100 km and the EU average household electricity price of roughly €0.30/kWh, every 100 km costs about €5.10. Charging exclusively on fast chargers — where prices across our supercharger database of 483 European locations range from €0.35 to over €0.70 per kWh — pushes that to €8.50–12.00/100 km. Compare that to a combustion-engined AMG GT 63 4-Door with its 4.0-litre V8 biturbo. Real-world fuel consumption sits around 13 L/100 km. At the current Czech petrol price of roughly €1.55/L, that is €20.15/100 km — roughly two to four times more. Even an efficient petrol performance saloon drinking 10 L/100 km at German fuel prices (€1.75/L) costs €17.50/100 km. Over 20,000 km per year, the difference between charging at home and fuelling a V8 AMG amounts to over €3,000 annually. Despite being the "entry" model, the GT 53 retains the 800-volt architecture and 600 kW peak charging rate of the GT 63. Mercedes claims 10–80% in 11 minutes — that adds roughly 70 kWh, translating to about 560 km WLTP or 400–450 km of real motorway range in the time it takes to order and drink an espresso. Not many European charging stations currently deliver 600 kW, but the 800-volt architecture means the GT 53 will pull maximum speed from any 350 kW Ionity or Fastned station. And the battery preconditioning system — standard across the GT EV range — ensures the pack is at optimal temperature when you plug in, regardless of outside conditions.European pricing and availability
Mercedes has not yet published the GT 53's price tag. The GT 55 (three motors, 805 hp) launched in Germany at €154,700, and the GT 63 at €196,350. The two-motor GT 53 should undercut both significantly — likely landing closer to the all-wheel-drive Porsche Taycan 4S at €107,300, its most direct rival. European deliveries are scheduled for early 2027, alongside the GT 63. The GT 55 arrives first, later this year. No EPA figures exist yet, and the 809 km WLTP number is preliminary — it could shift slightly before homologation. But the core proposition is clear: AMG is offering a GT that sacrifices outright savagery for the kind of range that makes an electric grand tourer genuinely usable across Europe.What this means for buyers
If you want the quickest electric AMG, buy the GT 63. If you want to drive from Munich to Milan without a charging stop, the GT 53 is the one that actually delivers. The 106 kWh battery and 600 kW charging remain identical — you are not sacrificing charging speed, only the third motor and a suite of track hardware most owners will never use. For European buyers weighing a high-performance EV against its petrol equivalent, the GT 53 makes the strongest financial case yet. Feed it with home electricity and the per-kilometre cost is a fraction of what any combustion AMG demands. Plug it into a fast charger on a road trip and the 11-minute stop still costs less than half a tank of premium unleaded.
