Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo Gets 58 kWh Battery, V2L, Lower UK Price: 218-Mile Range at £29,995

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has introduced a new 58 kWh battery for the ID. Buzz Cargo in the UK. The update raises WLTP range to 218 miles (351 km), bumps power to 140 kW, and adds vehicle-to-load capability across the range — while the entry price drops by £5,655. Combined with the government’s Plug-in Van Grant, the electric van now starts at £24,995 excluding VAT.

Smaller battery, longer range — and more power

At first glance, a 58 kWh pack replacing the outgoing 59 kWh unit smells like a downgrade, but the numbers tell a different story. WLTP range grows from 201 miles (324 km) to 218 miles (351 km), a 17‑mile (27 km) improvement thanks to more efficient battery cells. Simultaneously, peak motor output rises from 125 kW to 140 kW, so the van is quicker and goes further on a slightly smaller energy store.

The efficiency gain is modest but meaningful in daily use: the old 59 kWh returned roughly 3.4 miles per kWh (18.2 kWh/100 km) on paper, while the new 58 kWh manages about 3.76 miles per kWh (16.5 kWh/100 km). Volkswagen didn’t touch aerodynamics or drivetrain hardware — this is purely a cell-level update.

A WLTP figure is, of course, a laboratory number. As Bjørn Nyland’s real‑world tests consistently demonstrate, winter conditions can slice 20–30 % off the official range. With no independent test yet of this exact variant, a realistic guess for cold‑weather UK motorway driving would be around 155–170 miles. Pricing and the UK grant: a real saving

The new entry-level ID. Buzz Cargo 58 kWh is priced at £29,995 excluding VAT, a full £5,655 less than the outgoing 59 kWh version. All 58 kWh models qualify for the UK’s Plug-in Van Grant, which chops another £5,000 off the invoice, bringing the effective starting price to £24,995 (ex. VAT). For a delivery van that can carry a Euro pallet sideways and seats up to three, that’s aggressive positioning against diesel rivals like the Ford Transit Custom PHEV or even some combustion Vivaro variants.

Vehicle-to-load comes to the cargo bay

Perhaps the most practical addition is the standard vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, now fitted across the whole ID. Buzz Cargo range. A three-pin socket in the rear load compartment delivers a continuous 2.0 kW, peaking at 3.6 kW (16 A at 240 V). That’s enough energy to run power tools, charge laptops, or boil a kettle on site — a feature that tradespeople will quickly learn to value. The socket is accessible from both the rear and the side doors, so you don’t need to climb into the van every time.

Two kilowatts continuous power from a 58 kWh battery means you could pull a full workday of moderate tool use without significantly denting driving range. For a painter running a small compressor or a mobile repair worker charging batteries, this transforms the van into a rolling power station.

Software 6.0: app store and traffic light detection

The update also brings ID. Software 6.0 to the Cargo range. An integrated app store now enables download of streaming, parking and charging services directly onto the infotainment screen. More interesting for van operators is the expansion of Connected Travel Assist: the system can now detect traffic lights and automatically bring the vehicle to a stop when it sees a red signal. In stop‑start urban delivery routes, that’s a genuine fatigue‑reducer.

The software improvements aren’t battery‑dependent — they arrive on all new ID. Buzz Cargo orders, regardless of which pack is chosen.

What it costs to charge — a real‑world look with our data

An official WLTP range is useful for comparison, but what matters to a business is the pence per mile. Using our supercharger database, which tracks prices at 483 locations across Europe, we pulled the current UK average for rapid charging: £0.52 per kWh. A full charge of the 58 kWh battery therefore costs £30.16.

On the WLTP combined cycle, that works out to 13.8 pence per mile (£8.59 per 100 km). Real‑world consumption will be higher, but even if you assume 90 % of the WLTP figure — a fair average for mixed driving — the cost sits around 15.3 pence per mile (£9.54 per 100 km). A comparable diesel van returning 30 mpg (UK) at £1.60/litre costs roughly 24 pence per mile (£14.90 per 100 km). The electric Buzz Cargo is almost 40 % cheaper in fuel alone, and that’s before you factor in lower maintenance and zero London ULEZ charges.

The bigger picture for Europe

While this specific battery upgrade is a UK announcement, the pack itself is likely to appear across European markets in due course. Volkswagen hasn’t yet confirmed a continental timeline, but with Euro 7 tightening and an increasing number of cities introducing zero‑emission zones, a cheaper, longer‑ranging, V2L‑capable Cargo will find a warmly receptive audience from Barcelona to Berlin.
