One screen instead of three
Until now, a BMW driver had to assemble the picture from several places at once: the map in the centre display, a small car icon in the instrument cluster, and whichever assistance menu happened to be open. The redesigned BMW Maps app collapses that into one live 3D scene. The car is rendered inside its own lane at the correct elevation, together with surrounding vehicles, road edges and the upcoming manoeuvre. Driver-assistance status — whether Highway Assistant is active, what the sensors have detected, when the car intends to change lane — is overlaid on the same image instead of being buried in a submenu.
In plain language: the screen stops being a map with a car icon on it and becomes a live model of what the vehicle's sensors believe is happening around it. That is genuinely useful on multi-lane motorways, at complicated intersections and in dense city traffic, where a wrong assumption about which lane you are in is exactly the kind of thing that erodes trust in an assistance system.
Why BMW is doing this now
The new iX3 already ships with Highway Assistant 2, which allows hands-free driving on motorways at speeds of up to 130 km/h (80 mph) where local law permits. In Germany, BMW plans to follow with navigation-guided, semi-automated driving in urban areas during 2027, with more countries to come. A clearer visual explanation of what the car is doing is a prerequisite for that step: drivers who cannot tell what a system has detected will not leave it in charge, and they certainly will not take their attention off an urban junction.
Regulators are moving in the same direction. Under European rules, this remains Level 2 assistance — the driver stays responsible at all times. The UNECE R79 rules for steering assistance and the newer DCAS framework (R171) tighten requirements on driver monitoring and on how systems behave when the driver overrides them. Clear graphics are not a legal requirement, but visual clarity is one of the tools manufacturers use to keep hands-on, eyes-on behaviour intact.
Europe first — and the iX3 is built in Europe
The rollout starts with the Neue Klasse iX3, which BMW builds at its plant in Debrecen, Hungary, so European buyers are effectively first in line rather than an afterthought. The car's hardware is unchanged: 108.7 kWh of usable battery capacity, WLTP range of up to 805 km, an 800-volt architecture and peak DC charging of 400 kW, which BMW quotes as 10–80 % in 21 minutes. German list prices start at around €67,300 for the iX3 50 xDrive. Two caveats from the car's short history are worth keeping in mind. BMW has already had to issue a recall on the iX3's charging electronics over a possible electric shock risk — the details are in our report on the iX3 charging-electronics recall — and the US specification of the model gained extra range this year, as we covered in BMW's range boost for the US-market iX3. Software is increasingly where the brand experience is decided, in other words, and BMW is still ironing out the first Neue Klasse cars in public.

Tesla did it first — but BMW's goal is different
Anyone who has driven a Tesla since 2019 will recognise the idea: the central screen shows the car in its lane, the surrounding traffic and the manoeuvre ahead. BMW's version deliberately merges that with turn-by-turn navigation instead of keeping the two as separate visual languages, and it arrives in a car whose assistance features are still explicitly Level 2.
The competitive picture is crowded. Mercedes-Benz has built its own unified software stack, MB.OS, around the CLA and its wide MBUX display, while Volkswagen's current ID. models lean on a conventional map with assist overlays. BMW is not reinventing the user interface so much as catching up to a standard set by Tesla and refined by Mercedes — and it is doing so in a car it wants to sell at a premium. Figures are manufacturer WLTP and list prices before local incentives; trim levels and market-specific equipment change the numbers. What European buyers should watch
Three practical points. First, the update is tied to BMW Operating System X, so it does not retroactively cover earlier i4, iX or iX1 cars running OS 8 or OS 9 — those keep the current layout. Second, BMW says the upcoming i3, the iX5 and the facelifted i7 will get the same features, which means the unified 3D view becomes standard across the Neue Klasse family rather than an iX3 exclusive. Third, hands-free is not eyes-off: the driver stays legally responsible at all times, and the 130 km/h ceiling applies only where the law allows it, not on every European motorway.
Expect rivals to answer in software rather than hardware. Tesla's visualisation is already mature and Mercedes is pushing its own operating system into more models, so the differentiator in this segment is increasingly how clearly a car explains itself to its driver — not how many kilowatts it advertises.
Will my current BMW get the new unified BMW Maps view?
Only cars running BMW Operating System X, which debuts in the new iX3, receive the redesigned app. Older models on OS 8 or OS 9 keep the existing layout, even though they continue to receive other over-the-air updates.
Does the 3D view mean the car drives itself?
No. Highway Assistant 2 is a Level 2 system: it can handle steering and speed on motorways at up to 130 km/h where permitted, but the driver must stay alert and ready to take over. The new graphics are there to make the system's behaviour easier to understand, not to remove the driver.
When will urban semi-automated driving arrive in Europe?
BMW targets navigation-guided, semi-automated driving in urban areas in Germany from 2027, with additional countries to follow. Availability depends on national type approval and on how quickly the UNECE rules for driver-control assistance systems are adopted across Europe.
