What the two N EVs share — and what they don't
Let's get the hardware facts straight. Both cars run Hyundai's E-GMP platform with an 800-volt architecture. The dual-motor setup delivers 478 kW (641 hp) with N Grin Boost engaged and 770 Nm of torque. The battery is an 84 kWh pack — the larger unit introduced with the Ioniq 5 N in 2024. Both get electronically controlled suspension, an electronic limited-slip differential, and the same Pirelli P Zero Corsa rubber developed specifically for the N models.
Physically, the Ioniq 6 N has a shorter wheelbase, a lower roofline, and roughly 50–80 kg less mass to carry. On paper, that reads like a recipe for a faster car. And it is faster — just. The sedan shaves two-tenths from the 0–100 km/h sprint, bringing it down to 3.4 seconds. But the real story lives in how it achieves that advantage.
The 0.29-second gap that takes real work to extract
Professional racing driver Sam Maher-Loughnan, testing both cars for Driven+, posted a 49.81-second lap in the Ioniq 5 N. In the Ioniq 6 N, he managed 49.52 seconds — a gain of 0.29 seconds. But where the 5 N delivered its time with what he described as forgiving, predictable behaviour, the 6 N demanded what Sam called "considerably more effort." His description of the sedan's handling as "knife-edge" is telling.
This isn't a flaw. Hyundai appears to have deliberately tuned the two cars' torque distribution, stability control thresholds, and regenerative braking maps to create two distinct performance characters from identical motors and inverters. The 5 N is the accessible one — the car you can drive quickly without feeling like it's about to bite. The 6 N raises the performance ceiling but makes the driver earn every tenth. It rotates more aggressively off the brakes and demands more precise throttle inputs on exit. For track-day enthusiasts, that sharper, more demanding character may be exactly the point.
This approach — software-defined vehicle dynamics — is worth watching closely. It means a manufacturer can build one powertrain and battery set, then ship two meaningfully different cars without touching a single piece of hardware. That's a cost-efficient way to diversify a lineup, and Hyundai is among the first to execute it this deliberately.
Real-world range and charging: what the WLTP number hides
The Ioniq 5 N carries a WLTP combined range of 448 km. But anyone who has driven a 641 hp EV with any enthusiasm knows that figure is aspirational. In mixed real-world driving, expect consumption of 25–28 kWh/100 km. At motorway speeds in summer, you are looking at roughly 300–340 km of real range. In winter? Subtract another 15–20%. If you regularly exploit the N's performance, consumption can easily climb past 30 kWh/100 km — putting real-world range closer to 250–280 km on a full charge.
The Ioniq 6 N, with its slightly lower drag coefficient and reduced weight, should do marginally better on the highway — perhaps 5–8% more range under identical conditions. But Hyundai hasn't published a separate WLTP figure for it yet, and the difference in the real world is likely small enough to be academic.

European availability and pricing
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has been on sale in Europe since early 2024, starting at €74,900 in Germany. The 2026 model year reportedly saw a price adjustment downward in several markets — a welcome move in a segment where prices have been climbing steeply. The Ioniq 6 N arrived later and is expected to land at a similar or slightly higher price point, likely around €76,000–78,000 in Germany, though official pricing varies by market.
In the UK, the Ioniq 5 N launched at approximately £65,000. Both cars qualify for various European fleet and business incentives, though private buyer subsidies have largely dried up across Western Europe. What this means for performance EVs
Hyundai's software-first approach to vehicle differentiation is more than a marketing trick. It demonstrates that dynamic character no longer has to be baked into expensive physical hardware — different spring rates, different anti-roll bars, different differentials. Instead, a single well-engineered platform can spawn multiple models with genuinely distinct driving personalities, tuned entirely through code. That is good news for development costs and, ultimately, for how quickly manufacturers can bring new performance models to market.
It also raises an interesting question: if Hyundai can do this with two N models today, how long before a single EV platform underpins three or four cars that feel nothing alike — purely through software? And what does that mean for test drives, where a 20-minute spin might not reveal which personality you are actually buying?
The lap time difference — 49.81 vs 49.52 seconds — is almost beside the point. What matters is the effort-to-reward ratio each car demands. The Ioniq 5 N gives you accessible speed. The Ioniq 6 N makes you work for it. Choose based on what kind of driver you want to be, not which spec sheet looks better.
